Capers on Park Avenue
Jay Roberson is the Executive Chef at Capers on Park Avenue. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Friday and Sundays from 10:30 am-2:30 pm (closed Mondays and Saturdays).
Bluff Park native, Executive Chef Jay Roberson began his culinary career at age thirteen, as a dishwasher at Savage’s Bakery. He then worked his way up to kitchen manager at Incahoots, a local Greek restaurant. He obtained his culinary degree from Jefferson State Community College, where he met his wife, Lynn Smalley Roberson, who is also a chef. In eight years Jay became Executive Sous Chef at The Summit Club. In 1996, he became Executive Chef at Riverchase Country Club, where he was chosen Culinarian of the Year, as well as having “3 Apprentice of the Year” winners under his tutelage.
In 2003, Jay opened his own restaurant, Capers Comfort Foods, a unique “meat and 3” in an Alabaster gas station. With only 35 seats, he fed 2-300 guests daily for lunch. This restaurant won 13 awards in four years including Best Chef, Best Take-out, Best Inexpensive Restaurant, Best Meat and 3, Best Desserts, Best Fried Chicken, Best Fried Green Tomatoes, and Best Pies.
In 2009, Jay was asked by the Mayor of Pelham to provide service for the Civic Center and Ballantrae Golf Club. He catered to foundries, plants, factories, businesses, along with private functions.
At Capers on Park Avenue, Jay’s intention is to continue to provide the same great food and service he has become known for. Jay, his brother, Dale, and his sister, Julie, all went to school at Bluff Park Elementary School. As they say, “There is no place like home,” and Jay anticipates every person feeling the same when they enter Caper’s doors at Artists on the Bluff.
